The Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) is a high-performance, unclassified network designed to accelerate scientific discovery by providing robust connectivity to more than 50 Department of Energy (DOE) research sites and a vast array of global collaborators. Funded by the U.S. Department of Energyβs Office of Science and managed by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, ESnet offers advanced networking services that enable scientists to share vast amounts of data efficiently. With the current ESnet6 backbone, the network is equipped with multiple 100-400Gbps optical channels, delivering over 46 Terabits-per-second of bandwidth.
As a vital resource for large-scale science projects, ESnet caters to the growing demands of international collaborations in fields like high-energy physics and climate science. Handling approximately 20 petabytes of data monthly, ESnet is instrumental for researchers utilizing supercomputing facilities and major scientific instruments. By connecting over 270 research and commercial networks, ESnet enhances collaboration and innovation among scientists worldwide, positioning itself as a critical platform for next-generation scientific research.
