The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office is leading a groundbreaking initiative in partnership with the nonprofit DNA Doe Project to identify victims of Cleveland's notorious 1930s serial killer, known as the "Mad Butcher". This effort aims to give names to those who have remained anonymous for over 90 years, buried in unmarked graves in Potter's Field. The "Mad Butcher" is infamous for a series of gruesome murders where at least 12 victims were decapitated and dismembered, leaving investigators with the challenge of locating their final resting places.

Utilizing advanced techniques in genetic genealogy, the DNA Doe Project seeks to extract DNA samples from exhumed remains to create profiles that may lead to connections with living relatives. Dr. Thomas Gilson, the County Medical Examiner, emphasized the evolution of forensic science, highlighting the importance of uncovering the identities of the deceased. This poignant initiative not only aims to solve cold cases but also to restore dignity to forgotten lives, bringing closure to families and the community.
