Maine Legislature

The Maine State Legislature is the governing body of the state, composed of a Senate with 35 members and a House of Representatives with 151 elected officials, including three non-voting representatives from Native tribes. This part-time legislature convenes annually, with two regular sessions designed to address legislative business from December through June and again beginning in January of even-numbered years.

The Maine Legislature also features a joint standing committee system, which is one of the three utilized in the United States, facilitating in-depth discussion and analysis of proposed bills and policies.
