Southern Poverty Law Center

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is a dedicated advocate for racial justice in the Southern United States and beyond. Founded in 1971 by civil rights lawyers Morris Dees and Joseph Levin Jr., SPLC has become a pivotal force in dismantling white supremacy and safeguarding the human rights of marginalized groups. Through impactful legal action, they have successfully challenged institutional racism and defended the civil liberties of communities ranging from children and women to immigrants and the LGBTQ population.

SPLC’s extensive initiatives include monitoring hate and extremist groups through their renowned Intelligence Project and providing educational resources via Learning for Justice, aimed at fostering inclusive school environments. They also maintain the Civil Rights Memorial and Center in Montgomery, Alabama, commemorating the civil rights movement's legacy. With offices across several Southern states, SPLC continues to fight for issues such as voting rights, economic justice, and immigrant protection, working collaboratively with communities to build a more equitable society for all.
