The Commonwealth

The Commonwealth is a unique voluntary association comprising 56 independent countries, representing approximately 2.5 billion people worldwide. With a legacy rooted in the British Empire, the modern Commonwealth welcomes any nation committed to shared values of democracy, development, and peace, as articulated in the Commonwealth Charter. The organization includes 33 small states, many of which are island nations, and serves as a platform for collaboration among diverse economies, both advanced and developing.

At the heart of the Commonwealth are three key intergovernmental organizations: the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Commonwealth Foundation, and the Commonwealth of Learning. The Commonwealth Secretariat plays a crucial role in supporting member countries through various initiatives aimed at promoting governance, economic growth, and addressing global challenges such as climate change and inequality. In addition to facilitating Commonwealth Heads of Government Meetings (CHOGM) for policy-making, the Secretariat also provides technical assistance and impartial advice to strengthen institutions and foster inclusive governance.
